Love in Paris. It is one of the most mythologized concepts in Western culture. Paris, je t'aime deliberately sets out to deconstruct the monolithic idea of Paris as the city of love. In its place it attempts to give a nuanced portrait of both the city and the sentiment. As well as celebrating the plurality of love, the film celebrates the plurality of cinema. Featuring 18 segments, in wildly different styles and moods, by 20 internationally renowned directors; this collage-style film is only loosely held together by brief transitional sequences. The camera pans through the beautiful and squalid neighborhoods of Paris, as Gus Van Sant, Alfonso Cuarón, the Coen Brothers, and other directors meditate on love; showing us love being awakened, imitated, sucked dry, and reinvented. The layers of stories and conflicts that make up the concept of love are slowly peeled back and all of a sudden the phrase “love in Paris” seems fresh again. HÉLÈNE DAHL
