In Palindromes the master of dysfunctional faInilies talces on abortion. The movie revolves around the twelve-year-old girl Aviva whose goal in life is to get pregnant. When she manages it however, her parents force her to have an abortion. After the abortion Aviva runs away and, in a sequence full of associations to mythological American movies like Night of the Hunter and Wizard of Oz, she ends up at the house of the pro-life Christians; the Sunshine family.
Strange and dreamlike as it is, Palindromes acquires several extra dimensions by Solondz's decision to cast six different actresses and actors of various ages and ethnicities to play
the role of Aviva. With its non-judgmental stand on very difficult issues Palindromes is sure to raise eyebrows among both conservatives and liberals. But most of all the film will provide a fascinating and provoking experience for the open minded.
Solondz is the first recipient ever of the Stockholm International Film Festival's newly established prize, the Stockholm Visionary Award, handed out in to order to encourage the work, visions and achievements of contemporary filmmakers.
Palindromes was nominated for a Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival.
