When Troy Duffy succeeds in selling a script to film tycoon Harvey Weinstein at Miramax he soon makes a name for himself in Hollywood. He allows the filmmakers Mark Brian Smith and Tony Montana to follow his success and in the hysteria, not only manages to persuade Miramax that his band should play the soundtrack but even that he, himself, should direct the film. Duffy is seen as a new Quentin Tarantino, but he soon gets out of his depth. His arrogance and naivety, which systematically help pave the way for his success, also lead to his downfall.
For seven years Smith and Montana followed Duffy throughout both the success and eventual failure of his insensitive approach to filmmaking.
In the end, Duffy gets to make his film which he calls The Boondock Saints (starring amongst others; Willem Dafoe). However, during this first-rate documentary, neither Miramax, Duffy or his band come across as the real winners. The laurels on the other hand go to Mark Brian Smith and Tony Montana, who, with cameras rolling were able to capture the rise and fall of Troy Duffy' s Hollywood career.
