Between 1991 and 1999 Stéphan Oriach followed French artist Orlan, who since the 70's has explored and put into focus the approach to female beauty throughout the ages. In 1990 she started to undertake a series of plastic surgery operations. The operations are showed live, with Orlan all the time awake, reciting poems and answering questions from spectators and journalists. Oriach also gives several professions such as art critics, psychiatrists, and philosophers a chance to comment upon the process.
Orlan, Carnal Art puts into question the concept of body enhancement and what it does to the identity. Important and thrilling, the film is an interesting document on how to reason with contemporary society and its obsession with the relation between identity and appearance.
