Rio de Janeiro's carnival. The guitar virtuoso Orfeu plays so well that the sun rises above Rio's slums. Euridice comes to the city in search of her aunt, who is the last living relative she has and falls violently in love with Orfeu. The Rio of the 1990's is violent, with gang disputes and drug dealing. Passion, jealousy and desperation meet In the colourful carnival. Diegues bases on the famous myth about Orpheus and Euridyce a film in turn based on Vincent Moraes’ drama Orfeu da Conceicao. This was been filmed earlier, for in 1959 Marcel Camus won the Palm d'Or at Cannes and an Oscar for the best foreign film with Orfeu Negro.
