Frenchman Marcel Camus' story has meant a lot to the notoriety of the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. The film is a romantic story from the poor huts that sit on the mountain sides around Rio. Camus has modernized the myth of Orfeu, who brings back Euridice from Hades and has moved the story to the Carnival. The acting is quite unprofessional and the story is naive. But the film lives through its intensity, the music and the beauty of Marpessa Dawn. Orfeu negro was a big and lasting success, winning both the 1959 Palm d'Ore, as well as an Oscar for best foreign language film.
