Odile is looking for a larger apartment. Her sister, Camille, has just finished her doctoral thesis and fallen in love with her sister's real estate broker. In the office of the broker there works a man with dreams of being a writer.
In the middle of an important business meeting or during a testy family quarrel the actors suddenly start singing old hit tunes. Not with their own voices, but playback to the voices of Pierre Perret, Julian Clerc, Serge Gainsbourg, Dalida, Edith Piaf, Johnny Halliday, Charles Aznavour or France Gall.
Once again Alain Resnais has renewed himself, and that which could have been
a bad joke, becomes meaningful when the cliche's of the old standards best explain the everyday feel ings of the characters.
The couple Agne's Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri, wrote the screenplay and play the main characters in the film. This is their third co-operation after the films Smoking/No Smoking. The dialogue is rich and rhythmic, and deals with the misunderstandings and hypocrisy that surround man in his search for control over his Iife. On connait Ie chanson is about our faults, our contradictions,
all those things that poison our lives
but also make us so human. This is a sad film, but one leaves the theater with a smile on one's lips.
