On August 15th 1998, in the middle of the Northern Ireland peace process, an IRA bomb went off in the small town of Omagh. 31 people lost their lives in the terrorist attack that left the community in chock. Travis' powerful drama tells the true story of the events in Omagh, from the unsettling images of the explosion to the long struggle of the Omagh Support and Self Help Group's quest for justice. In the midst of it all, we find the support group's spokesperson Michael Gallagher, marvellously played by Omagh-born Gerard McSorley, a father who lost his son Aiden in the attack, but also a citizen who won't settle
with anything less than the truth about what really happened that afternoon - who's to blame and who knew what in advance.
The film has been made with the full cooperation of the support group and of the Gallagher family and deals with a real life tragedy but also with human strength and commitment. With great acting performances from a mostly Irish cast, a documentary-style camerawork and no soundtrack music, Omagh is a moving and unforgettable experience. The film won the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.
