The heyday of Nick Nolte isn’t over, if anyone thought it was. On the contrary, in Off the Black the acting talents of this 65-year-old enfant terrible are above satisfactory. Under the supervision of debuting filmmaker James Ponsoldt Nolte creates a nuanced portrait of the drunken and disillusioned former baseball player Ray Cook. Equally talented young actor Trevor Morgan plays Dave Tibble, a high school student, who has just as little hope for himself as the future. In each other Ray and Dave see the father and the son they lack. They are given the possibility to make up for lost time. This is a bittersweet low-key drama about the reverse side of the American dream. The shiny surface of the nuclear family has cracked, the women have deserted the ship. Alone and abandoned the men stand clueless as their old identities fall apart. It’s sad but not without hope. Dark but not without laughter. CHARLOTTE LJUNGGREN
