After losing a bet, Maiquel has to dye his dark hair blond. He is getting ridiculed by a 'local gangster, Suel, and he reacts impulsively and violently. After killing Suel, he prepares
to escape from the police, but Maiquel is shocked when instead, he is overwhelmed with gifts from his neighbours, and even receives thanks from the local police chief. He becomes everybody's favourite. Soon, however, he is asked to get rid of other people as well- Rio de Janeiro is filled with very rich people willing to pay a lot of money to get rid of young criminals in the poor neigbourhoods.
This beautifully shot story of antihero Maiquel's bizarre way out of unemployment towards a life of money and fame
was a big success at the Berlin Film Festival this year. Based on critically acclaimed novel The Killer (0 Matador) by Patricia Melo, the story is splendidly brought to the screen, where its combination of bizarre dialogue, weird sense of humour and heavy social realistic drama makes it a truly captivating cross-over film, accompanied by the compelling soundtrack of Dado Villa-Lobos.
