No Exit

No Exit

av Tad Danielewski

A screen version of Jean Paul Sartre's drama about existentialism and moral, of the same title. Hell is a second-class hotel. Three recently dead people who don't know each other are sentenced to a sojourn in a hotel; the lesbian Inez, played by Viveca lindfors, who has an answer to everything, the cowardly idealist Garcin and the adulteress Estelle are confronted with each other and are forced to answer for the wrong actions of their lives.

Comment:
Glorious beginning of independence! ...
A group of us from The Actor's Studio got it together ... a South American tour ... We did three evenings for the stage ... And
Tad Danielewski, Polish and a super leader, organized the filming of No Exit with a South American company called Aries
Film. Sartre's brilliant play in a Tabori screen version! My 4th spouse Tabori. .. yes, I had married once more ... Another genius in my life ... He wrote a wonderful screenplay ... We shot it at the studios in Buenos Aires ... It was a glorious time ... Every actor's dream ... Performing at night in a jammed, packed house and filming during the day ... I played Inez, a great part... Tad's point of view was ''Nothing brittle or intellectual but flesh and blood and sex ... After all, we were all burning in hell.''
The whole thing was a great experience.
It was one of the first films I made after having been exposed to Lee Strasberg and ''The Method''. I was beginning to break loose ... Every night on the stage I knew I was on the right track ... But my intensity scared me during the filming. ''Maybe it's too much for the screen Tad?'' I said. Tad being Polish and not afraid of passion, reassured me: ''No Viveca, it's great.'' I know now there is no difference between acting on the stage and acting on the screen ... The work is the same ... There is only the difference being false or true, being phony or real, between talent or no talent.
No Exit was the beginning of a new area for me as an actress. The effort was acknowledged ... I won a Silver Bear for it at the Berlin festival ... At the time I didn't appreciate the enormous honor given to me ... Now having been to several film festivals in Berlin, I truly appreciate it..
No Exit opened during the newspaper strike in New York. With no money to make up for the loss, it was never given a proper release. But the film has found a life of it's own. It plays in all colleges over and over again ... And pops up in the art-film market..
