''Actors don't usually play themselves'', Rod Steiger has said, ''They play an image which has been successfully launched over the years. They are not the same person you meet if you meet them privately. And it is probably, in most cases, the best arrangement. '' For actors like Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and Groucho Marx the above is unreservedly true. In other cases, such as Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Steiger himself, it is more complicated, as these were renowned for their both variable and unpredictable role creations. That Steiger has had such varied collaborators as Samuel Fuller, David Lean, Humphrey Bogart, Robert Aldrich, James Mason, Joan Collins, Orson Welles and Sergio Leone reflects his rich variety. Disguises and dual roles have throughout the history of the cinema been used to confuse, entertain and frighten. It is the latter quality which is put into practice in Jack Smight's elegant lady-killer thriller comedy No Way to Treat a Lady, with Steiger as a serial killer lonely-hearts racketeer, George Segal as the policeman on his trail and Lee Remick as the intended victim. You can also enjoy Michael Dunn, the dwarf actor who always gave memorable performances.
