Joel Butcher's search for his brother Zack's murderer brings him into the criminal world of the border town Tijuana. What kind of a person was his brother? Bernstien's fascination with Orson Welles is made clear in two aspects. Firstly the sceneries and moods remind of the classic film A Touch of Evil and secondly the character Zack is in many respects like the diabolic Harry Lime (Welles' character in Carol Reed's The Third Man). He plays with the film noir-genre, with its expressionistic imagery and with a narrator's voice that creates unease. But while Bogart was the tough guy impersonated in these films, one meets in Night Train the absolute anti-hero, the genuine ruffian. One gets an intrusive insight into Joe’s alcoholic intoxication and nightmares, thanks to George Lockwood's imaginative editing and sound.
