Nether World

Nether World

av Anders Dalgaard

Two men are sitting in a car in a garage. They are Old Timer and California. 30 years separate them, plus a whole bunch of values and behavioural antics. They are assassins working for the CIA. They are on a join assignment and are waiting for their victim. When she arrives chaos breaks out. When a second woman turn up they are faced with a dilemma, should they kill both women to ensure the success of their assignment or should they not kill anyone so as to avoid killing an innocent bystander.
Like Becket, the director wants to show the lone man in a world full of chaos and dissolution. Samuel Becket's most important themes dealt with humanity's isolation and the breakdown of communication. His works are pessimistic and contain tragicomic figures without hope. Everything is predestined. As in the play ”Waiting for Godot”, two men are sitting around waiting. The waiting becomes their main activity. The story is a very exciting and dark one about a man who reflects on his choice of profession.
Conditions for the this production could have been better. The director travelled to the US with 100,000 Danish crowns, got hold of the actors he wanted, and gathered together a production team of 15 people, most of them Danish friends of his who flew across the Atlantic to work virtually for free. The shooting went quickly. He spent four months editing the film, mainly at night when it was cheapest, and finished it off at a total cost of 165,000 Danish Crowns.
”Nether World” is a powerful testimony to the fact that you can make good films on a minimal budget.
