Return of the Idiot

Return of the Idiot

av Sata Gedeon

Navrat Idiota is a melancholic comedy which takes place around the New Year in a smaller Czech town. A young man returns to his birthplace after having grown up in an institution isolated from the rest of society. All his experiences are therefore based on the first impression of his surroundings. On his return he meets a world filled with distant relatives and complicated relationships. It is a warm film about lonely souls. Slowly the plot moves forward, accompanied by a strumming piano and human humor. The film's idiot has a true understanding of humans' true selves and his honesty leads to embarrassing situations and vital revelations. The people in the film are afraid of loneliness, and are driven by a desire for love, which leads to complications that deep down are based on honesty. It's that honesty which the idiot shows them. Honesty towards yourself, towards your fellow human and towards your heart. Not for nothing is the film inspired by Dostojevsky's novel The Idiot. A human calm characterizes the film, which with beautiful photography and an intricate manuscript leads the viewer to gradually get to know the characters and to finally understand their actions. Navrat Idiota is an excellent depiction of complicated relationships between siblings, lovers and strangers and has a humorous description of over-protective mothers which many people will recognize.
