My New Gun

My New Gun

av Stacy Cochran

My New Gun
Debbie, a housewife in her 30's, is married to Gerald. They have invited Gerald's partner and his girlfriend to come to their house. They tell them that they have become engaged and show them the fiancees engagement present; a gun with her name engraved on it. Debbie is shocked, but Gerald isn't. He buys a gun too and Debbie is obsessed by it. Their neighbor Skippy, who is in love with Debbie, shows up one night and asks to borrow the gun.

Comment:
In the United States today we are totally bombarded with pictures of weapons. Often women carry them. This is what
gave me the idea for this film. People often ask me if My New Gun is supposed to be a comedy. It can be called comical, but it isn't very funny. It is about fairly tragic things which I find comical. My New Gun is not meant to reflect reality, but I wanted it to feel real. This is why we wanted to film
it in New Jersey, since it was supposed to take place there. That is where I come from and where I have lived most of my life.
When I looked for actors for the film, I wanted a kind of concordance with the
character and the story. I had been wanting to work with Diane Lane for a long time. It made a big difference to the film that she accepted the part of the housewife Debbie. James Le Gros (who was Matt Dillon's friend in Drugstore Cowboy) looked just like the neighbor Skippy and he has a wonderful way of making his work look so simple, as if it were no effort at all.
In line with the traditional American view that a man has to protect his woman, a doctor gives his wife a gun so that she can defend herself. But my purpose wasn't to make a political film. My New Gun is not meant to be a contribution to the debate on the possession of arms and it is not a particularly violent story. It is a film about love and consideration. It is just that in our society a weapon is a completely natural possession, sort of like a car. Unfortunately.
