Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive

av David Lynch

Lynch’s hypnotic and deeply mysterious tale about wannabe-actress Betty arriving to Hollywood to attend movie auditions was originally intended to be a new Twin Peaks. Lynch made this film as a TV-series pilot to be broadcasted on ABC, but when the network turned it down, he was backed up by French Studio Canal + to shoot a new ending, diminishing the effect of a mystery unsolved and adjust it to the cinema format. The result is in the lines of his earlier Lost Highway where different personas and parallel universes transcend each other.
When Betty finds the amnesiac Rita lodging in her borrowed apartment, the uncovering of her memory loss engulfs them both on a journey into the dark alleys of the dream factory.
With the somewhat anachronistic milieus, Lynch plays with the imagery of real Hollywood and the fictitious expectations of it, and manages to involve this structure into the mystery plot. His existential view of the movie industry and the creation of illusions and dreams conflict with our perception and cinematic logic. Character memories intertwine with the basic conception of memories, fantasies and dreams are haphazard and dissolved, and Lynch is the ultimate Mr. Sandman.
