In this bizarre passion drama started life as a preliminary exercise, for the tv film Bödeln och skökan, which Gunnlaugsson directed; a story about the poor in medieval society. Mörkrets furste is about Jón Magnusson, a young, cultured vicar who takes over a troubled parish in the isolated Icelandic west. The post includes a woman that God has chosen for him - his predecessor's widow who is 30 years older than him. With satanic ardour, the reverend Jón practices exorcism to drive out the devil from each and every one whom can be suspected of having dealings with evil. This applies especially te the young woman he falls in love with. The reverend Jon knows that a witch's best trick is to lead a poor man astray by tempting his carnal desire - and he meets the devil embodied in the woman. He feels that the devil is literally inside her on the top of his genital.
