A dark norse and the only pure film noir of the Big Four Bogart Bacalls. Director Daves, one of the darlings of French critics in the 50's, partly tells this story of an escaped (innocent) convict through subjective camera, with interesting results. A somewhat unbelievable storyline is quiekly balanced by a good San Francisco atmosphere, a strong supporting cast (villain Mooreheae and seedy plastic surgeon Stevenson shines), pristine, imaginative camerawork and exquisite performances by the two leads. For a change, it's nice to see a subdued, reasonably non-aggressive Bogart without a plethora of ''classic'' lines emerging from hid lips; he's just there, and that's great enough. Bacall, probably more beautiful than ever in this one, acts with relaxed confidence beside her leading man. Take any frame of her from this period you could put it next to the word 'style' in any dictionary.
