7–18 november 2012

A man wakes up in a hotel room without a clue about where he is or what has happened. After a while the memories from yesterday come back and he realises that his life has taken a drastic new turn. The combination of remembering a yakuza and his mistress is one thing but the memory of having a rifle in his hand is completely different Monday could actually be seen as a film about alcoholism and shotguns, but, as ever so often in Sabu's films, there is considerally more. Sabu's mixture of humour and violent reality takes Japanese film's engagement in aesthetic violence another quarter of a turn. Bearing in mind the number of modern yakuzafilms, Sabu stands out as an innovator in this increasingly worn out subject. Sabu's additions - humour and a serious key-tone - make the difference. Monday won the critics prize at the Berlin Film Festival this year.
