One of the biggest Indian blockbusters of 2000-2001 Mohabbatein is about the classic, if clumsy, confrontation between love and tradition, in the shape of a young music teacher whose main mission is to play Cupid to three pretty insufferable teenage couples, and a stern principal who stands by tradition and discipline. The film features two of the biggest Bollywood stars - the ageing Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Unfortunately, one of the most popular heroines, Aishwarya Rai, appears only as a ghost, which undercut its box-office possibilities.
With the teen romances seeming like one long ad for Wonderbra, Mohabbatein is representative of the typical romantic, feel-good, high-protein sort of song-and-dance fantasy that has driven Bollywood in the 90's.
