Mimic

Mimic

av Guillermo del Toro

A terrible epidemic threatens to wipe out the children of New York. Working together, the brilliant researcher Susan Tyler and her husband, Dr. Peter Mann, succeed in stopping the illness by combining the DNA from several different species. However, the result of this masterpiece of genetic engineering - the insect Judas - gains entry to New York's biosystem and develops its own laws.
”Mimic ”constitutes Guillermo del Toro's first American film. He previously made the vampire film ”Cronos”, which was the most expensive film ever made in his home country. ”Mimic ”is based on a novel by the pulp-fiction author Donald A. Wolheim. What fascinated the director was that the creature's only purpose is survival. ''Don't mess with nature,'' could be the slogan for this film.
Del Toro has created a film brimming with gothic atmosphere, in a visual style that gives New York a mediaeval feel. Like ”Alien, ”another film in the same genre, ”Mimic”, with its stylized aesthetic, is a claustrophobic film in which the atmosphere is more frightening than the monster itself. The shots from the camera speeding through New York's sewer system take the audience's breath away. ”Mimic ”is a film driven forward by action not characters - the protagonists don't exactly sit around discussing their childhood. The confusion and fear in the film are brilliantly portrayed, but so is the guts and gumption necessary to do what has to be done. At its most brilliant moments ”Mimic ”could be a cross between Buñuel and Hitchcock - Del Toro's two favourite directors.
