The film is about young people in Madrid. A rock-band heading for the big record contract are threatened by the demands of the recording company. Around the band there are girlfriends who get in the way of the guys' egos, old friends who more and more get pushed into the periphery and siblings who live doublelives - schoolgirl and drug pusher.
Mensalta is based on a short story by Jose Angel Manas and the I iterary narration is tangible in the film. Between the scenes from the everyday I ife of the characters, the camera rests on certain details: a small lucky charm or a clock in a cafe which has stopped at ten to eleven, are captured in image and it is as if the tempo of the people stops. The films is recharging and the story once again starts.
This is a brutal story, which takes place around a rock-band and its members. Drugs, violence, careful threats to the feeling of community, and the dream of a life in Madrid keeps the film together. But the director does not put more emphasis on one story than another, he portrays the frailty of life through letting us close to the characters, whether they are from the upper-class or a alienated junkie.
The beginning and the end of the story, - or the pages of a story, as the sub-title
of the fi 1m, paginas de una historia, saysis an opening in the, at times, heavily predestined. The film starts were it ends, or?
