Melinda and Melinda

Woody is back, this time better and more serious in tone after a series of lighthearted comedies. The premise for Melinda and Melinda is four friends who are out on the town, having drinks. One of them tells a story about a girl who crashes a dinner party. Among the four friends, there are two playwrites. One who sees the story as a tragedy, the other as a comedy. Thus begins the the two stories of Melinda.
In the first, Lee and Laurel are having a party to promote Lee's chances of getting a part in a play when Melinda bursts in, in a terrible state. Addicted to pills and alcohol she moves in with the married couple, setting off a chain
of events that will change the lives of all involved.
In the mean time, Hobie and Susan are having a dinner party to talk a reluctant producer into financing her feature debut. In bursts Melinda after popping 28 sleeping pills. After emptying her stomach she joins the party to everyone's delight.
Allen moves around his usual slightly neurotic thirty-something intellectuals in New York. Comic talents like Will Ferrell and Amanda Peet fit perfectly into his universe, but Radha Mitchell, as the two different Melindas, is nothing short of amazing.
