The Vaseline loving former model, football player and aspiring plastic surgeon Matthew Barney is the topic of this in-depth documentary. Director Alison Chernik follows Barney through his day to day activities while creating Drawing Restraint 9, shown at Stockholm International Film Festival 2005. The working process itself is a major part of Barney’s work and Chernik displays the artist’s choices and how they lead to the final creation. In a number of interviews Barney gives his opinion on creativity and his choice of materials, as well as his work with metaphors and symbols. The artist then offers interpretations of his own pieces, while early film clips and stills from exhibitions expand this portrait of one of the greatest art-icons of his generation. His persona is further put into context as his father, as well as his life-partner Björk, share their views. Intellectual, mind-bending and challenging, this film offers a rare access to one of our most interesting parallel universes.MARTIN FROSTBERG
