The Australian director Geoffrey Wright’s version of Shakespeare’s classic Macbeth is set in today’s ganglands of Melbourne. Macbeth, played by Sam Worthington, is a young gang member with big ambitions of getting to the top of the criminal hierarchy. Supported by his wife, the purposeful lady Macbeth, he is determined to achieve his goals, no matter what the cost.Wright borrows and toys with the aesthetic from all kinds of genres. Horror flicks, thrillers, teen movies, even a bit of softcore porn; no genre is too ''low'' for Wright to use. The dialogue, however, is Shakespeare’s original. It is also this juxtaposition between the words and the images, which turns Macbeth into something quite unique. The mix between high and low was something Shakespeare always was striving to achieve. Even though Geoffrey Wright’s portrayal is a radical reinvention of the original, he seems to have listened to the old master’s advice. PER NYSTRÖM
