Lunar Lithuania is a film about a period in Lithuanian history, seen from the perspective of several different people.
It spans from the end of the Second World War, when the Red Army marched in,
and ten years ahead in time. It is a period characterized by Soviet occupation and Stalinist indoctrination.
The film is centered around the warm, beautiful and loving teacher Angele, who like an angel does not deny anyone her love, and thereby gets a shameful reputation. But she survives practically everyone, forgives everyone and despite the proclamations of the Soviet powers, she does not desert her Christian faith. One of the Lithuanian resists fighters is called Jesus for his likeness to the savior. A meeting between Angele and Jesus is so fruitful that a little faithful child is produced.
This is not a costume movie or a dramatic film where the story is in focus, but rather the poetic portrayal of the art film. The normal and the supernatural blend together.
I do not think that Lunar Lithuania is about Lithuanian history as much as it is about the importance of faith. Angele's relationship to her enemies and judges, the men that she unwillingly lures becau-
se of her beauty, is reminiscent of Christ's relationship to his enemies. Another one of the survivors is old Pulmonas, who has a drinking problem and is a polytheist, and who consequently refuses to give up and stop proclaiming his visions and sightings. He and Angele become contrasts to the materialism of the Soviet system.
