Saxophone player Izzy Maurer (Harvey Keitel) has an accident. During a performance in a nightclub he encounters a ricochet bullet. After recuperating he stumbles upon the body of a dead man, whose suitcase Izzy takes care of. Inside he finds a phone number and a mysterious box, containing a peculiar stone. The phone number leads him to actress Celia Burn. The peculiar stone seems to have an affect on its surroundings - and soon the two are deeply in love. Other people are however also looking for the stone, and when Izzy is captured and interrogated by Dr. Van Horn (Willem Dafoe) the events take an unexpected turn. The film turns out to be a journey, straight into Pandora's box, which is Izzy's soul.
This is the film about Izzy- the man who gets a second chance, both physically and emotionally. Lulu on the Bridge is a romantic mystery, with both elements that are close to earth and those that are slightly surrealistic. In a film that is intellectually provocative, conspiring and very romantic, we meet two souls searching for a more substantial life.
It is a humane and philosophical reflection, that PauI Auster presents with >. A film seeking to discuss the boundaries between coincidence and destiny, reality and fiction, and life and death.
