Luba

Luba

av Alejandro Agresti

In an unknown city in Europe during the first confused days of World War II, a young Idealistic writer tries to escape the secret police. He ends up in a brothel, rents the most expensive room and the most beautiful girl, Luba. They fall in love, but get only a few fleeting moments together before
the police arrive. Viveca Lindfors appears
in the part of the madam of the brothel.
Comment:
I met Agresti in Toronto at the festival ..
I was there screening my own film and decided one morning to go and see Secret Wedding ... Someone told me I must. .. It screened at nine a.m ... I was stunned by the film (and I am not easily stunned) and excited ... After the screenings there are always questions and answers ... Here was thiS terrifically young. attractive South
American kid ... The director He talked
about how he made the film I put my hand
up: ''The thing is Alejandro'', I said, ''Because
you are a bit of a genius You can really
never do anything wrong It may not be
the greatest film ... Or the most successful one ... But whatever you do you will always be fascinating ... I love your work ... And your film ... I take my hat off to you'' ... He had no idea who I was ... An elderly woman in a black hat..
He must have liked what I said ... Later the evening ... We ran into each other in the hospitality suite ... All filmmakers come there ... I~s quite terrific ... I am wearing my name plate on my chest... He looks at me,
''You are Viveca Lindfors?'' ... I say yes ... He hugs me like) haven't been hugged in a long time ... ''I've seen all your films, Viveca ... '' He was so beutifully warm ... Besides he is South American and I always had a soft heart for them ... And as I said, attractive .. He is younger than my youngest son ... So it's strictly comradeship and respect. .. Anyhow, the next night he brings his producer .. ''Would you come to Amsterdam and do a film with me'', he said ... '') have a part for you ... Not the biggest but a good part .. Would you like to read it?'' ... My answer was immediate ... ''I don't have to read it -I would love to work with you ... You are a geni·
us.'' ... I was laughing, so was he ... A couple of months later I was in Amsterdam doing the film ..
I liked my part. .. I liked the people I was working with and Agresti lived up to every anticipation ... I have never seen anyone use the camera like he does ... As if the camera was a soulmate to the action and the happenings in the film ... Watching him work was exhilarating ... His visions are always uni· que ... I eventually learned that he started and still is a cameraman ... That he grew
up with cameras ... I haven't seen Luba,
I can't wait. .. Perhaps it's not his best
film ... But there is no doubt in my mind
that one day he will make a great one ..
