Frank is getting close to 30 and is frustrated. ln his fear of failure, his artistic ambitions stretch only so far as to making props for mediocre tv shows and discussions with David Mamet-quoting friends. Frank decides to find his own flat and abandon his steady room mate, only to fall for the estate agent, the sparkling Ruby. Inside a fairly conventional boy-meets-girl story, we are given the most interesting and exquisite film direction from the UK in a long time. With sudden freeze frames, fast camera movements and well thought out close-ups, the style-conscious Thraves has made a Faces in the London of the new millennium. The Low Down refuses, in its tangible Godard and Cassavettes references, to nourish the stereotypical love film.
