Love will tear us apart

This is a story about four people, all of them immigrants who have left China forthe new administrative special region of Hong Kong. They are all fortune hunters who have failed in reaching their goals and have ended up at the bottom of society. Ah Jian has lived in Hong Kong for some time and runs a hole-in-the-wall shop, where he sells porno films of various types. After been thrown out by his girlfriend he talks his ex-girlfriend Ah Van into letting him move in with her again. She used to be a successful dancer, but was rapidly forced to leave the glamour of the scene because of an injured ankle and is now living in poverty. When the girlfriend goes away for the weekend, Ah Jian meets the prostitute Ah Ying, who left China when her husband was executed for stealing, and they become lovers. Meanwhile a young man, Ah Chun, is devising plans on how to avenge himself on Ah Jian for being cheated in his porno shop. The film wants to tell us that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. In the Chinese tradition the longing after ''the other'' is a general feature. It is used in songs, fairy tales and films. Hong Kong is regarded as a gold mine containing invaluable treasures for anyone. However, the real world is not as beautiful as the dream and many fail. Yu Lik Wai emphasises the details instead of showing a more comprehensive social perspective. He thinks that the film shows a resignation to everyday gloominess, but at the same time, a desire to break with society. Despite this it is a positive film, filled with warmth and unexpected laughter. The message is that joy is very important.
