When Liza, the wife and love of Wilson Joel, inexplicably commits suicide, his entire life breaks down. Reading Liza's suicide letter is too big a task for Wilson and he turns to his mother-in-law for help. But the letter leaves him with no explanation and only makes his situation even worse. Desperate, he takes refuge in drugs. Not the ''usual'' alcohol and drugs, but to gasoline cans and model airplane fuel. Through his addiction, he finds new friends in the world of remote controls but, even if this gives him momentary consolation, nothing lasts. His road keeps going steeply down hill and the conclusion he comes to is shocking. Supporting actor veteran Todd Louisa has made a tranquil feature debut that hammers its low-paced, sad mood into the mind of its viewers. Philip Seymour Hoffman (Happiness, Magnolia, The Talanted Mr. Ripley) plays the lead with the same conviction and absolute presence as always. His portrait of a man in total despair also gives room for humour and gentleness and he proves once again to be one of the most solid stars in the American Independent sky. Hoffman's older brother Gordy Hoffman wrote the script for the film and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Lisa Taube
