Love & Basketball is almost a classic Hollywood love story. Monica and Quincy are 11 years old when they meet on a basketball court. They are both children of NBA professional players and dream of being the best one on the court. They have feelings for each other but they are both strong willed with demands of personal assertion. We follow the growing up and the careers. And we see how childish friendship becomes love between adults. The film almost follows the ABC of Hollywood. But what makes Love & Basketball special, beside the fact that it delves deeper into the emotions of the main characters than Hollywood films usually do, is partly that the cast is African-American, and partly that the gender-roles are switched. It is Monica who is the main protagonist, and she refuses to give up her career or playa subordinate role. It is she who finally courts him, fights for him and asks him to marry her. The film was produced by Spike Lee.
