French actress, scriptwriter and director Agnes J aoui returns after her successful directing debut four years ago with The Taste of Others. Jaoui co-wrote Look at Me with her partner Jean-Pierre Bacri (their sixth script together). The film revolves around a father-daughter relationship. Lolita (Marilou Berry), a tubby girl in her twenties who sings classical music, is neglected by her father Etienne (Bacri), a famous French novelist. Etienne remarries and has a new child with Karine, a woman almost Lolita's age. When Lolita's music teacher Sylvia (Jaoui) and her husband, up-and-coming writer Pierre (Laurent Grevill), befriend
Etienne they are drawn into the self-centered older writer's power struggling with the world that surrounds him.
Look at Me criticizes a society obsessed with beauty and, on another level, explores the world of music and singing. At the same time it is a study in different levels of power. It is a beautifully acted movie, awarded for Best Script in Cannes earlier this year. Both Jaoui and Bacri star in the film, yet young actress Marilou Berry stands out making a stunningly subtle feature acting debut as Lolita.
