A fictional story of a small circle of friends and the changes in their world beginning in the summer of 1981 when the first rumours were heard of a ''rare cancer'' in the gay community, known today as AIDS. As the story passes on from one year to the next, each one of the characters is profoundly affected by the disease, either through his own illness or because of the illnesses and deaths of friends and lovers. Longtime Companions takes its title from the euphemistic phrase often used in obituaries to describe the surviving losers of those lost to AIDS.
Comment:
In rehearsal we tried to develop the character's relationships. One of the things I wanted to show in the film was how everyday behaviour changes because of any crisis. But I didn't want to sentimentalize the situation. I tried to present everything as realistically and objectively as possible - to make everyone's behaviour honest and true-to-life. It was essential that the people we encounter are human and identifiable, so that the film is not about New Yorkers and gays, but about people with whom audiences could identify.
