In this story of the lost son returning home (in a double sense), Buscemi puts working-class drama together with romance and dark humor. The story revolves around Jim (Casey Affleck), a 27-year apathetic would-be writer, who returns home to his small Indiana home town after failing to make it in New York. Back home, Jim is once again faced with the difficulties of dealing with his dysfunctional family (and later on, his even more dysfunctional friend Evil). But there is also the single mother Anika (Liv Tyler), who becomes a light in Jim’s state of dark confusion. One could say that this is a grittier, not-as-designed Garden State with a much less likeable main character. In a very good way, that is. Lonesome Jim is Buscemis third feature length film and like it’s predecessors, it takes it’s strength from an observant script and a dialogue with a naturalistic sense. As a director, Buscemi is very focused on letting the actors shine (which might not be such a surprise). ERIK AUGUSTIN PALM
