A run down public toilet in South London at 3:07 AM: the middle-aged prostitute Kelly, bearing the bruises of a recent beating, stumbles in together with the 11-year-old runaway Joanne. The young girl is in a state of chock and her clothes are torn to pieces. Being chased by their thuggish pimp Derek, they decide to escape the city, and catch the train to Brighton.Avoiding the clichés of modern realist British films, London To Brighton constitutes of contradictory characters set up in a vision of a debased underworld. The two heroines cling to each other in a world of crime, violence and revenge and through cleverly positioned flashbacks their past is revealed. The praised, young director Paul Andrew Williams has made a technically impressive debut that has been compared to Mike Leigh’s Naked. It is an unsentimental and blistering piece of work, with amazing acting by Lorraine Stanley and newcomer Georgia Groome. LUKAS ECKESKOG
