The Living and the Dead

The Living and the Dead

av Simon Rumley

When Lady Brocklebank falls ill, her husband Lord Brocklebank is forced to leave their huge decaying mansion for a few days to gather money for a much-needed operation. The Lord arranges for the family nurse to take care of his wife, who will also be accompanied by James, the couple’s schizophrenic son. James, seeing an opportunity to finally prove to his parents that he’s perfectly capable of looking after his mother, starts the day with locking out the nurse of the room and disconnecting the phone. Led by his distorted way of reality James start overdosing, underdosing and misdosing medicines while a nightmare escalates. Inspiration for The Living and the Dead came when Rumley’s own mother fell sick with cancer and died shortly afterwards. To deal with his experiences of this living hell - the trauma, the confusion, the unreality - he created a visual journey through mental breakdown. The Tottenham House - once a World War I hospital, later a school for young men, a drug rehabilitation clinic and also the location for the film - is according to local reports said to inhabit ghosts.
