Jimmy West lives out in the boonies of Texas. At the age of 19 he realizes that there is something horrible and frightening in the family past. The only one who knows what happened is his father, a Vietnam vet named Ray, played by John Savage. He is a sadistic and psychologically sick man, who forces Jimmy to have intimate relations with his mother (Natassja Kinski). One day a man shows up who turns out to have unexpected knowledge about the West family.
A psychological drama and a mystery that is revealed very gradually to the audience. The truths that surface are not of the kind that are easily digestible. This film is a dark family portrait that has little in common with the Texas millionaires of the Ewing family. Rather, one is reminded of John Steinbeck, especially his novel Of ”Mice ”and ”Men”, in part because ”Little Boy Blue” could work as an intensive theatre experience, but also because there are characters that would fit in Steinbeck's work.
It's a pleasure to see the excellent John Savage in such a demanding role. Savage is an extremely underrated actor who has never managed to break through on a wide scale. Here he gives one of his best performances ever. Ryan Phillippe is also excellent in the role as Jimmy. Phillippe belongs to a young group of hot Hollywood actors whose careers have just begun. His next appearance is in the horror film ”I Know What You Did Last Summer” and in the disco tribute ”54.”
