The film takes place in New Orleans shortly following the end of World War II. Blanche DuBois arrives in the city in order to live with her pregnant sister, Stella, and her husband Stanley. Blanche has left her teaching job in their hometown of Laurel Mississippi.
The truth is, that she has more or less been forced to flee after having seduced one of her students. The reason she gives for her unexpected visit is that she is overworked and needs to rest. She also claims that the family farm has been lost due to economic difficulties.
Stanley is immediately suspicious of his sister-in-law, and secretly begins looking into her past. Stanley discovers what happened to Blanche in her hometown, and that she sold the family farm they had inherited, and spent all the money. He tells Mitch and Stella what Blanche has been up to, causing Mitch to break off his budding relationship with her.
While Stella is in hospital giving birth, Stanley tries to force himself on Blanche, who has a complete breakdown. Upon her return from hospital, Stella breaks with her husband.
