Sweden's most recognized young director Lukas Moodysson makes a u-turn in describing teenage hopes, dreams and reality with his third feature Lilja 4-ever. Somewhere in the former Soviet Union, teen girl Lilja lives with her mother in a seedy neighbourhood, where the biggest thrill is found in a bottle of Vodka or a bag filled with glue. When mom suddenly takes off for America, leaving her daughter behind with a vague promise of the land of the free, Lilja's life soon enters a downward spiral. Her only hope is found in Volodja, a suicidal boy who becomes her friend in the fight against despair. Moodysson describes Lilja 4-ever as his most hopeful film so far, claiming that hope is to be found even in death, perhaps a somewhat inadequate explanation for many. Where feel-good films Show me Love (Fucking Amal) and Together (Tillsammans) brought out laughter, recognition and afterthought from its audience, Lilja 4-ever smacks you right in the face. You mayor may not agree with Moodysson's reflections on how global capitalism is making people unscrupulously take advantage of the weaker, leading in to the inevitable fall for us all. But it's hard to shake off the image of Lilja being betrayed and treated like trash not only by the men using her, but by the adult world that should be cherishing her the most.
