Generally considered to be Godard's visually most revolutionary film sice Breathless. In this vision of bourgeois cataclysm, Godard criticizes the collapsing consumer society as a married couple set out for a weekend trip, passing through nightmarish landscapes of highways where people play chess amongst burning cars and dead corpses (a famous ten-minute shot). They enter a brand new world of murder and rape, peopled by everyone from radical cannibal terrorists to generally suspicious people passing by.
The hero and the heroine are tragic figures, incapable of surviving without consumer goods, and emerge as typical for Godard's image of despairing romanticism.
