By combining French suburbs, an amateur cast and a 18th century play director, Abdel Kechiche scored an immediate box-office hit with L'Esquive in France last year. Kechiche portrays a group of North Mrican teenagers whose lives are shaken by a love affair. The quiet and passive Krimo falls in love with Lydia but she does not notice him. Not until Krimo's former girlfriend violently confronts her. Soon the entire group is caught up in Krimo's love life, acting out the emotions he is too repressed to express himself.
At the same time the group is rehearsing for a student production of French 18th century
writer Marivaux' play The Game of Love and Chance. The play makes subtle comments on their own problems and difficulties.
L'Esquive gained a lot of attention in France. upon its release due to its intense dialogue and how it describes the suburbs, not as a place full of gang rapes, drugs and forced marriages, but as a setting for love and a passion for theatre. This is a film that provides young viewers with a chance to embrace their own artistic potential and to demand the means for that expression.
