The world is changing. So do the seven deadly sins. To keep up with his times,
God summons a young dead Belgian biker to his heavenly realm. Poverty, affection, honesty, modesty, courage, purity and hope. Are these sins or virtues? A film in episodes by seven young directors, in which Robert Mitchum plays the part of God.
Comment:
These new Seven Deadly Sins bear witness to the state of vice and virtue in our times and provide a short history of the decay of reigning moral values.
Indeed, may it not be argued that in practice the Seven Virtues of bygone days led inevitably to disaster?
Not up to the argument, the seven directors decided accordingly to take a closer look, each in his own fashion, at a vice famHiar to him ... an evil once practiced, or practiced still.
Yet, while pursUing their individual approaches, our directors never lost sight of the common aim - to constitute a new species of spiritual handbook for the betterment of the over-righteous generations in their wake.
The wide range of treatments (from sur· realistic farce to false documentary and
from heart-wrenching tragedy to Czech psychodrama) should enhance the ''never before on your screen'' fascinations of the tales and betray the whiff of heresy behind them.
In addition, this diversity ensures the broadest possible appeal, and even mitigates to some extent, so the directors like to think, the punishment of actually viewing the film.
Finally, the fact that the seven directors refuse to sign their respective episodes overtly, even in this artistic domain where the ego reigns supreme, participates in the frank hypocricy and collective ''holierthan-thou'' mentality that animates the entire enterprise.
May God and all His journalists pardon us this nosegay of deadly sins, and be assured that in bringing our labour this far, we have willingly indulged in the sins of yesteryear, although they are not as yet, alas, enthroned as virtues in their own right.
