Comment:
Leon the Pig Farmer is unusual in more than one way. It is the first Jewish film comedy ever made In Great Britain. It is an independent film, both financially and creatively. In November of 1991 Gary had been trying
to find sponsors for the film for eighteen months. But at that point we got together and decided to try to make the film anyway.
We were lucky to get most of the actors that Gary had wanted for the different parts. Mark Frankel in the part of leon surpassed all our expectations. We are sure he will go far - England needs more people like him. Connie Booth, who wrote the script for Fawlty Towers together with John Cleese, thought it was the funniest script she had ever read and accepted right away.
During the production of the film, we made all the decisions jointly and this made things less stressful. Gary rewrote the scenes that didn't work in rehearsal and Vadim instructed actors and film team.
80th actors and film team were enthusiastic and believed in the project. The fact that most people on the film team had never worked on a feature film production before, made us into a devoted, professional and tightly knit group. We got good publicity. At times it felt like all England kept their fingers crossed.
Perhaps people want to see a different kind of British film than what we have seen in the past ten years. There are new generations of people who have never experienced a world war and who don't think as much about the class system. The world may expect British comedy of manners or histOrical drama, but we want to go into new areas. We want to make films that are more emotional than intellectual, films that make the audience lean forward in their seats and not just calmly sit back and enjoy the scenery, films that are full of ideas and that are entertaining.
