Leaving By the Way is a light-touch drama of a single mother's process of family loss. Losing the husband and father of two in a mishap at sea, 35-year-old IIga is entangled in a relationship with a ranger. His commitment in holy matrimony with the local witch implies a mysterious expertise in bizarre folk nostrums to bear on the problem. Simultaneously her son Douka is acting out on his loneliness, skipping school and imagining his father ''presumed alive'' by his side. With a narrative complexity and in-depth character details, theatre director Viesturs Kairiss has made a cinematically original piece on folklore, relations and loss between men wherein the luring forces of nature may conflict with human emotions.
