The poor and outcast Trent is constantly reminded of his position in society by the residents in the upperclass area where he mows the lawns. His strong friendship with the ten year old girl Devon would not be accepted by the environment if it was to be discovered. When the well kept secret finally escapes the consequenses are terrible for all involved.
John Duigan has chosen to put the story in the Lousville ssuburb Camelot Gardens, an Edward Scissorshand type of environment in the american south. This place, that is soaked by its extremely homogenusity, emphasises the emotions that are awakned by the story. With ”Dawn Dogs” Duigan proves that he can decribe complicated human relations in a colorful esthetic way, and at the same time show how anger can darken our sences. The mere ten-year-old Misha Barton, here in her fourth (!) film, is a brilliant choise as the somewhat self-willed and imaginative Devon. She offers a long string of scenes together with Sam Rockwell that one will not forget in a long time. Although the film takes place in the wealthy american southern environment, the european story telling technique of John Duigans gives the otherwise weak story a wellneeded unpredictability.
