Life Nr. 2

Life Nr. 2

av 10 students of Academy of Culture

In ”Latavio”, ten directors present a short film as apart of their examination work, most of them using the airport as their main theme.
The airport is a place where all kinds of people pass by. A place where you arrive and depart, a place for anonymous encounters. There, the dream of freedom becomes tangible, to be able to fly away and leave for a far away destination. The Latvian film students, who made ”Latavio”, realised that the airport is simply an environment with great possibilities. These newly graduated film makers have all (except one) chosen to use the airport as their source of inspiration. The exception is an animated film. The graphics that show the titles of the films are adapted to the airport theme, in that they look like the ''revolving letters'' on the large black announcement boards at the airport.
The introductory film ”Alfredo's Poetry” depicts an intense worship of a young, lonely and unhappy poet. ”The Comet 2” is an animated little film about the creation of life on earth and the mating rituals of animals and humans. The film ”Slurp” centres around a little girl and her grandfather who live right next to the airport. Although the grandfather has never flown, he dreams of becoming a pilot. ”Life no 2” is the name of a film about two women who literally swap lives with each other. Life's corruptibility and a former pilot who's gone blind, are the themes for the film ”The Little Hand”. In ”The Bad Day” a security guard is portrayed looking at bags pass through the X-ray machine. Through the contents of the bags, one gets a glimpse into the lives of different people. One of the bags belongs to a person he knows from before.
The main character in ”Cleptomania” is a presumptive bomber and terrorist who finds true love. ”Strange Heaven” deals with love and relationships, and how seemingly small occurrences can greatly affect ones lives. The will to fulfil ones dreams is the theme of the film ”The Comet”.
The collection of films in ”Latavio” are philosophical and witty. Life, freedom, dreams, opportunities, encounters and relationships are recurring topics. All films have various meanings and are open for interpretation by the audience.
