In her directing debut, Paprika Steen tells a story from A to Z about people that are afraid to communicate, afraid to reach out, not knowing how to move in the right direction
in life. Britt (Sofie Gråböl) and Claes (Michael Birkkjær), a married couple who have lost their teenage daughter, are participating in group therapy sessions. Britt is asked to talk about the death of their daughter but refuses to do so, unwilling to expose her feelings to the group and to her husband.
The camera follows the couple and reveals their inner fears, their longings and their way
of coping with life without their child. Niels and Vivi, friends of the couple, feel guilty for not being there for them: Vivi starts to regret the choice of a life without children, knowing that it is too late then to have them. Both couples struggle to keep a good face while they are falling apart on the inside.
Steen skilfully shows these distinctions between surface and depth, resulting in intimate and beautifully composed pictures. The music, composed by the director's brother Nikolaj, ties it all together, adding to the atmosphere that permeates the entire film.
