In the shadow of Oliver Stone’s recent Fidel Castro interviews in
Comandante, debuting director Mechthild Barth tells a different
tale from the island of communist dictatorship. Two siblings, Fran
and Lola, contemplate the idea of leaving Cuba and the society
that imprisons their spirits. Lola notices how Fran’s work as a
waiter is compromised by the attention of tourist women, slowly
turning him into a gigolo. Meanwhile, their bond to each other is
growing beyond pure family ties.
With small means Barth has made a distinctive exploration
of suppressed dreams and wishes. The narrative is beautifully
intertwined with images of splashing feet beyond a pool
surface – reconciling another temperamental scene in the fi lm,
while also prophesising the future escape.
